Cues ($1.99) by Henri Normak is an app that helps you remember things you need to do at certain locations. Think of it as a geolocation reminder system.

The first thing you’ll notice when you launch the app is the beautiful design. I instantly fell in love with the gorgeous interface and custom buttons in the screenshots. It looks amazing on a Retina display.

To add your first reminder, just tap on the “+” button. This brings up a new popup window, where you can enter a title and any additional notes (up to 180 characters in length). Then add an icon to go along with your reminder (choose one of five), then specify if it’s repeating and whether it will trigger on entry or exit of a location. The final step is to add your location, which I found to be a bit frustrating.

To add your location, the app will first prompt you for location services. Once that’s done, you should see your current location on Google Maps marked by a red pin, as it should. Then Cues will highlight nearby places with a purple pin. You can adjust the radius with the Distance slider.

Now, what if you want to create a reminder when you’re not near the location you want? You can move the red pin by holding and dragging – once you do this, the highlighted places near the red pin will be refreshed. Each time you move the red pin, the nearby places will change. If you happen to want the reminder to go off at one of the highlighted spots, just tap it and then select the blue arrow to have the app record the location. Otherwise, the location for your note will just be the where the red pin is. Give the location a name (if you’re using the red pin) and assign a color to it. The location will be saved in your collection of spots.

My biggest problem with this method of location is that there is no easy way to search for a location or address. You currently have to drag the pin to where you want it to go, which can be tedious. I would like to see a way to search for a location or just manually enter in an address to search, like in the native Google Maps.

When you enter or exit the location, the app should send a notification to you. Since this isn’t necessarily a task manager app, there isn’t an option to “complete” a reminder. Instead, there is a button to turn a reminder on or off. If you need to delete a note, just hit the gear icon in the top left corner and delete it, or just swipe left-to-right (opposite way to cancel). There are also different ways to sort your reminders, which you can trigger by shaking the device.

Since Cues relies on geolocation to send you reminders when you are within the vicinity, the app will have to run in the background and have location on to work. Due to this, you may notice faster battery drain than normal. However, if you are always needing reminders at specific locations, then this should not bother you (and I’m sure you’ll have plenty of opportunities to charge, right?).

The app will display a badge count when you have notifications that went off. You can also view the notifications you’ve had from within the app by tapping on the bottom of the screen, which shows that you had “cues.” To get rid of them once you’re done, just tap “Mark all read.”

I think the adding of locations needs a bit of work, like I mentioned earlier, as well as other things. The “Shake to Sort” keeps popping up, which I don’t want it to do. I got it – why do I need to be told to shake my device a dozen times to sort it? There definitely needs to be a setting to toggle this off every time. Also, more icons – five isn’t nearly enough, is it?

Cues only does one thing – geolocation reminders – and does it fairly well. It needs a bit more work to be more intuitive for adding locations though, but there is definitely some potential here. For the current price of $1.99 though, improvements need to happen. If not, then I believe $0.99 is a better price.

I can only recommend keeping an eye on this app for now, and hope iOS 5 doesn’t kill it.
